BBC Strictly Come Dancing star Giovanni Pernice has been supported by Rose Ayling Ellis as he shared a big announcement on social media. Giovanni, aged 32, took to Instagram to issue the announcement on Tuesday evening.

“Can you guess what it is?” he said, adding: “Yes, that’s right. I’m learning some BSL, a journey I started last year after being partnered with Rose, who is now a close friend.”

“But I’ve got something juicy to tell you all,” he continued. “And [you’re] gonna love this. Feeling like you missed out? This is how deaf people often feel in everyday conversation.”

“Learning even a little bit of sign language can make a big difference,” Giovanni continued. He added: “A simple phrase can go a long way.”

Rose praised Giovanni, saying: “Credit goes to @gjlilley for teaching @GiovanniPernice BSL.” The Strictly champion, who lifted the Glitterball Trophy last December, then said: “Love this very much.”

Fan Pauline replied: “This is brilliant! Well done, Gio – I very much admire your dedication to learning BSL.” Bodhi said: “I finally started my BSL course when my some started school, I’ve always been interested but learning baby signs to help with his developmental frustrations really cemented that I want to learn this and pass it to my son as his second language so if he encounters anyone at school with hearing impairment, he can help them not feel so isolated.”
