A deaf father has been left amazed by just how clever his toddler daughter is at communicating after showing she knows to say ‘mama’ and ‘dada’ in the correct ‘language’ for each parent.

Zach has been teaching his daughter Madi how to use sign language to communicate since she was born. At the same time as his wife has been communicating with her verbally.

It appears the clever little girl picked up both languages and knows to tailor her communication method based on who she is speaking to.

In a new TikTok video the dad shows how little Madi refers to her mum as ‘mama’ always verbally calling for her, while she uses the sign language for ‘dada’.

“My hearing daughter refuses to sign mama… she always mouths it,” the dad explains in the video. “But she’ll sign dada, I don’t understand it.”

The video, captioned ‘Is what it is I guess’, has caught the eye of thousands of people who are amazed the young girl has picked up on the different communication methods needed in her household.

“She’s speaking both your languages. She knows mama can hear her and daddy uses hands” one person commented on the video. Another said: “Little language learning brains are amazing! She’s trying all the things.”

Zach says he and his wife are always trying to use sign language to communicate to make things easier for Zach, though she also speaks verbally to Madi to help her develop her English.

It’s not the first time the little girl has shown off her signing skills. A few months ago the while in a department store with her dad she began using sign language to tell him there was a baby crying in the store.

Since then Madi’s sign language skills have been building and one of her more cheeky skills is that she can sign for candy when she wants some.

The family share their sign language journey on their TikTok account @oursignedworld to nearly half a million followers.
