DUBAI, 26th June, 2022 (WAM) — During the first half of 2022, the Ministry of Community Development organised 5 sign language courses targeting 86 employees from various government and private sectors to facilitate communication with people with hearing disabilities and disseminate sign language among employees in the government sector to ensure quality of service and efficiency in work.
Several level one and two courses offered to a number of staff at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai as well as Roads and Transport Authority in Dubai (RTA).
Wafa Hamad Bin Sulaiman, Director of Welfare and Rehabilitation Department at the Ministry of Community Development, said that the Ministry of Community Development through these specialised courses, aims to promote the inclusion of people with hearing disabilities into society and empower people of determination to obtain their basic rights and the best services.
She added that sign language courses for government sector staff included a set of knowledge pillars such as an introduction of sign language, history and importance to the deaf people, learning how to read facial expressions, body movements and connotations and the difference between sign languages. The courses also included a definition of hearing impairment (deaf), introduction of deaf culture, language signs in Emirati dialect, finger alphabets and training in word formation through finger spelling, identification of family signals, colours, states, weekdays, numbers, signals of the working environment, and the formation of correct sign language sentences for communication with deaf people.
